Linen in Lithuania
Sometimes it seems as if linen has been weaved throughout the fabric of our lives, and maybe, because in some ways that is especially true for us now that it has become a part of our day to day. But before that, it has always been with us in our history, in our family and in our nostalgic memories and ideas of the past - almost another world before fast-fashion and one that we are slowly and with joy circling back to again.
When you hear linen, what do you think of? For us, it’s napkins at breakfast, the Christmas table cloths for gatherings, the perfect linen towel placed just where and when you need it to dry your hands. Freshly washed linen dried in the sun…We associate it with the comfort of everyday rituals, and a comforting practicality with a respectful nod to the legacy of linen. Now more than ever we can understand and embrace this incredible textile for its sustainable and eco friendly spirt from start to end.
For Lithuanians throughout history (and europeans in general), linen often meant tableware and underclothes until the 1800’s when it became easier to produce and more accessible to the wider population, our families. Today, linen is still produced in Lithuania and is especially praised for its high quality and traditional methods of processing. In Lithuania, linen is highly admired and holds a special place in our hearts thanks to its reliability and nostalgic comfort through generations.
Like many of you, we grew up during the rush of fast fashion and like you we’re still processing the effects and doing our best today. Little did we know then how much our world would change and that we would one day be creating clothing with linen and with a much deeper appreciation for the fabric than we ever though possible…and…so inspired to share it with others through sun + her.
